Circadian Rhythms are physical, mental, and behavioral changes that follow a daily cycle. They respond primarily to light and darkness in and around human environment. Light triggers the release of various hormones thus regulating the circadian rhythm. Color temperature plays a key role on human circadian rhythm - the sleep and wake cycle of everyday life.
Blue wavelengths are short, high-energy, cooler CCT light waves, which suppress Melatonin, and promote the release of Cortisol and Serotonin thus improving alertness, cognition and mental performance. Therefore, one feels alert around midday, as it is comprised mainly of blue light waves. However, the same blue light at night can cause sleeplessness. Whereas, softer, warmer CCT light waves at night stimulate melatonin, which induces sleep and cellular regeneration. Lighting not only effects people physically and emotionally but can also change the appearance of objects dramatically. The key is to have artificial lighting that can be tuned to the circadian rhythm.
SEROTONIN: A hormone that is responsible for our alertness, mood, appetite, sleep, and overall wellness. It’s known to fight depression. It is often referred to as happiness hormone. The bright sunlight promotes Serotonin secretion within the body.
CORTISOL: A steroid hormone that regulates metabolism, immune response and other key activities, also including responding appropriately to stress. Exposure to bright & short wavelength (bluish white light) helps produce Cortisol in the human body.
MELATONIN: This hormone induces sleep, and helps the body slip into a calm and relaxed state. Low intensity warm white light helps increase the levels of Melatonin.
